The town of Sighisoara has been built in 1190, but the first reference of Sighisoara has been made in 1280 with the name Castrum Sex (the 6th citadel). In the year 1298 is the German name Schespurch mentioned (and later 'Schassburg'). The town is mentioned in 1367 as 'civitas' which means 'city'. The Romanian name of the town is first mentioned in 1435. The form 'Sighisoara' has entered the Romanian vocabulary from its Hungarian origin “Segesvar” (the Seghes citadel). In the interbelic period, Sighisoara has been the capital of the district Tarnava Mare.
The clock tower, placed in the east corner of the inferior plateau of the citadel, has been built to protect the main entrance (the towers has shooting charts) in the citadel and to host the Council. Its double function explains the amount of thought that has been put by the citizen while building the tower and its severe look celebrates it. The Clock Tower has served the reunions of the city council and storing the archives and treasure of Sighisoara. Built in the 14th century or later, the tower has four little towers built on each corner of the roof, which symbolize the right of capital punishment.
The church on the hill is probably the most valuable architectural structure of the citadel of Sighisoara. The building of the church has started in 1345 and has been completed in 1525 and is hallowed to St. Nikolas. The church has been built over the foundation walls of two ruins: a roman chapel and a foursquare tower. It is the only monument in Transylvania that has under the chorally a crypt where bones from the 16th-18th have been hidden.
The monastery church has been hollowed to St. Mary and has been owned by a Dominican order. The church and the Franciscan monastery (destroyed in the 19th century) have been two separate buildings, but they became a unit for the first time trough a letter of indulgence written by the Pope Boniface's the 8th in 1298.
The roman-catholic church, hollowed to St. Joseph , has been built after the demolition of the Franciscan monastery in 1894 on the north-east side of the citadel, in extension of the citadel wall, according to the plans of the local architect Letz. After the fire from the 22nd of march 1983, the church has been restored on the inside. The organ is originally from a Saxon church and has been built by the organ builder Karl Einschenk in 1908.
The house with the stag's antlers, named after the stag's head placed on the corner of the house, is a typical Transylvanian-renaissance building, probably dated from the 17th century. Typical for the Transylvanian renaissance style are the thick walls and the ceiling with a massive arch built with stones and tiles.
The Venice-house has its name from its windows in the typical Venice style. It has been built in the 17th century and has been the residence of the mayor Stephan's Mann, whose tombstone is kept in the church on the hill.
The Vlad Dracul house, former Paulini house is probably the oldest building of the citadel with its cellar built of river tiles. Today, the 'Vlad Dracul' house is a restaurant, designed in the medieval style.
